Barriers And Barriers Of Communication - 843 Words

All work centers are different and all have obstacles that may lead to ineffective communication. Identifying those barriers and working to overcome them, will lead a work center to a higher communication competency. My previous office was no different than any other. We had multiple barriers to overcome with our communication efforts. Some of those barriers are common to any workplace: noise and distractions, competing messages and filters (Bovee/Thill, 2016). We also had cultural barriers. These contextual, social, nonverbal, age, gender, and religious differences. These barriers bring a difficulty to communication, however they can easily be dealt with easily. The work center is noisy with both human and equipment causing distraction from a message. We overcame these distractions by only disseminating information when vital and also usually doing it in more than one form. Short meetings are held on work floor to pass out messages. All personnel are gathered close together and all machinery is turned off to limit any noise distraction. Many times this same information is also resent out in e-mails or posted on bulletin boards to help remind personnel. We also have issues with competing messages and filters. If you have ever heard the term. â€Å"Too many chiefs and not enough Indians†, then you know our office. There are numerous supervisors at different levels that might have different messages. One boss may say one things and other may say another.
